Week 7: Thursday
Sara stands at the top of the table in her new purple dress, her face red, and not from the eight flickering candles. She's making hamster cheeks in concentration, and Jin remembers stage fright, that crippling hot freeze.
But Sara plunges on. "Thank you for coming to my birthday," she says very seriously to the family party of six. She wanted to give her own birthday speech, like the grown-ups. "I'm eight years old now and I will do my best next year in school, and learn things at home and help my mother. Thank you mom for the cooking and everybody for my presents." She seems out of breath, but then she smiles. "Okay, that's it." And she bows.
Jin wants to sweep her up and hug her, but holds himself in check with superhuman restraint. It's her moment, everyone beaming at her, Meisa and Jin's mom and Meisa's mother and even Akira, who was arguing with her about the whipped cream on the pudding just ten minutes ago.
She's a beauty and a genius and they're the bravest kids he knows.
Jin clears his throat unobtrusively, and then he gets to concentrate on holding out his plate for a piece of the cake.
"What were your other presents, Sara-chan?" Jin's mom asks. She gave Sara a handbag from the latest popular girl brand, purple and silver and sparkly, perfect with the dress. It'll go well with Jin's parka the next time he gets to carry it around.
"I got my shoes," Sara looks under the table, "and granny Sachi gave me the earrings and the bracelet and the necklace and Akira gave me the bunny."
The bunny is a soft squishy toy with floppy ears. Akira bought it for her in Okinawa with his pocket money, and Jin got a preview when he picked him up at the station last night. They haven't decided on a name for it yet.
"And mom gave me the puppy shelter game for the Wii," Sara goes on, and adds, "and a rolling chair for my desk," conscientious even about practical gifts.
"And what did your daddy give you?" Kuroki-san asks her with a bright smile.
Sara beams. "A surprise. He says it'll arrive on Saturday."
"Oh," Kuroki-san says, shooting Jin a glance before putting on an enthusiastic face for Sara. "I'm sure it'll be an excellent surprise, if you have to wait some extra days for it."
Won't it just. Jin smiles at her, perfect polite ex-son-in-law, and for once it costs him nothing, not even a cringe.
"You have to come on Saturday too!" Sara demands of both her grannies. "We have cool games."
Jin eats his cake, a fluffy creamy composition that he should probably chip in for. Meisa is getting a little stressed about Saturday's madhouse extravaganza, and Jin will be spending Saturday night in his box and can't even help with the clean-up.
But they all appreciate it if he makes money. Whichever way.
He catches his mother's eye. She hasn't asked him about work yet, because she steers clear of the subject in front of Meisa's mother. Jin's got a good answer now, his private functions, omitting the private fucking, but he's kind of glad anyway. Usually all he needs to say is that he's looking.
He scoops up some biscuit crumbs and stares and then realizes right now it's a lie, he's not looking. He hasn't looked at all, not since last week, since...
He's got half a piece of cake left and no appetite.
What has he been thinking? He needs a job, he needs an income. Just because he's got an income... he can't keep letting Kame...
He really can't.
He looks at Meisa's mom, all his swagger gone and hopes she doesn't notice. Maybe she's right about him, thinking him lazy, maybe Reio's right that Jin always takes the easy way.
Sara manages to eat two pieces of the cake, and Akira puts away three. Jin admires the dress and the shoes again and is grateful not to be the center of attention. He gets to hold No-name Flopsybunny while Sara tries to put her new jewellery on by herself, under Meisa's watchful eye. With her eyes sparkling harder than the handbag, she's a true little princess.
Jin helps Meisa clear away the dishes, leaving the grandmothers to twirl and compliment Sara.
"Sorry I can't help on Saturday," he says while they rinse the plates off. "Just, you know."
Thinking about the box is a relief right now.
"It's no problem," Meisa says, "I'll deal. Akira will help me, he promised. And your mom would if I asked her."
"When's your mom flying back?"
"Monday," Meisa says. "She's staying over the weekend."
Outside Sara is doing a little dance, to lots of encouragement. Jin and Meisa share a look in their quiet corner, the parent corner.
"It always feels strange," Jin says.
"Yeah. Can you believe it? Eight years." Meisa gives him a funny little smile. "She was smaller than that bunny."
"And wrinklier," Jin says, and even though she laughs he can tell it's hitting her as hard as him. She looks at him, and for a moment they're not divorced and Jin's not a failure, and he wraps an arm around her.
"And here I am glad when she learns how to put her socks away," Meisa sighs, leaning against him. They still fit together easily, catching glimpses of the living room through the gap in the door.
Sara is trying to persuade Jin's mom to play a girl-eating monster.
"Wouldn't it be nice," Jin says, "if they got cleaner but stayed this small and cute."
Meisa laughs again. "We'd save a fortune on shoes, too," she says, hugging him around the waist and holding on.

Date: 2013-01-31 03:23 pm (UTC)The MeisaxJin interaction made me tear up a bit, it's nice to see Meisa for once not depicted as a bitch :) They had a lot going on and well, I'm always on Akame's side ( 'course I am) but still it's nice to see they feel still affection for each other. Coming from a divorced family, I know it's everything BUT easy :)
As for Meisa's mother, grrrr. I hate that she's not even trying, but at the same time I appreciate she keeps everything from the kids -.-'
As usual, thank you for the treat. Now on to Akakame interaction XD Please ;) There's not much time 'til they'll live happily ever after, we're already at week seven O.O

Date: 2013-01-31 06:03 pm (UTC)it's nice to see Meisa for once not depicted as a bitch :)
We think it's unfair to depict her as a bitch just because she married Jin. And we know nothing else about her that would make us think she's not a perfectly nice person. It's sad when writers feel that just because they love a particular pairing, they have to diss the alternative partners.
Coming from a divorced family, I know it's everything BUT easy :)
Our theory is they went through a more tense time when Jin was still living there, and maybe a little bit after, but they do like each other and they're both mature people, so once the stress and tension that came with having unemployed Jin at home had faded into the distance a bit, they just... rediscovered their friendship.
Now on to Akakame interaction XD
Not at all greedy, are you. ♥

Date: 2013-01-31 04:30 pm (UTC)Yikes, Jin. Job. The deal with Kame can't go on forever. Another job wouldn't hurt, no. They'd stand on a more equal ground too if money wouldn't have to change hands when they... meet and do stuff. Hmm.
The tiny Jin and Meisa interaction is sweet and somewhat hurtful ;;______; I just feel so sorry for them. Agh.
(no subject)
Date: 2013-02-01 08:13 am (UTC)Yeah, another job... taking the money dependency out of the relationship with Kame would probably help him think more clearly.
We feel an appropriate amount of guilt for what we did to Jin and Meisa. >_>
Thank you for commenting! :D

Date: 2013-01-31 04:45 pm (UTC)Annnnd here goes Jin again, with his "NO I SHOULDN'T BE DOING THIS WITH KAME IT'S NOT OKAY WAAAH" thoughts, such a killjoy LOL. I mean like, I get why, especially around family, he would feel bad/awkward about it. Especially since it's the reason he's not looking for more jobs like he should be doing, but honestly who would when you know you'll get a nice pile of yen weekly for some sex? XD And anyway, I think even if he does find another good paying job, like if he gets to a point where he doesn't need Kame's monies, he'll still want to see him anyway. :) He likes seeing him now, he looks forward to seeing him. And maybe, if money stops being a factor and they just continue seeing each other because they want to, he won't have to feel bad anymore. Saying to yourself "I'm only letting him fuck me because I need his money" sounds terrible. But saying "I'm letting him fuck me because I want him to and because he brings nice beer that we have afterwards", isn't bad at all. He really needs to be more honest with himself and what he wants from Kame. It'd make his life soooo much easier. XD But because he's a stubborn bakaface I know he won't for awhile.
She looks at him, and for a moment they're not divorced and Jin's not a failure, and he wraps an arm around her.
Meisa laughs again. "We'd save a fortune on shoes, too," she says, hugging him around the waist and holding on.
ONCE AGAIN YOU GUYS GIVE ME MEISANISHI FEELS IN AN AKAME FIC AFDSGFDHGFDGH. It's just, with them, it's like a "what we could have been" thing and it makes me a bit sad. It seems like she still cares about him a lot, even though he messed up a lot of things for her. Poor Meisa deserves a sex buddy too, LOL.
(no subject)
Date: 2013-02-01 08:13 am (UTC)'stubborn bakaface' - we like it! *g*
We agree totally that Meisa deserves a sex buddy, or a new husband somewhere down the line. (Or, well, first one and then the other.) But she'd had enough of guys for a while after Jin, and now she's a busy mom. *g*

Date: 2013-01-31 08:02 pm (UTC)She is like, totally adorable, though. With the puffy hamster cheeks and the serious grown-up speech, and all the lovely presents she's telling Jin's mom about. It was good to find out a little more about how at least one of Jin's parents is sort of involved in this entire deal, and that Jin's mom asks about his work situation and everything. Then Reio was mentioned and I couldn't help but think he was right, saying Jin always takes the easy way out.
Not that he always does, but with this entire Kame thing... Yeah, he kind of is. Even if his brain was probably all messed up and unable to comprehend what the fuck was going on. It can't go on forever, Kame paying him for... stuff. Jin's neither a whore nor charity, so, yeah. And together with looking for another job, Jin should maybe also tell Kame to stop it? Like, isn't that a good idea?
It'll go well with Jin's parka the next time he gets to carry it around.
Ugggh, this was just too funny. And cute.
Akira is so sweet, buying his baby sister a present with his own money! <3 What a lovely big brother :D
And dammit, Kuroki-okaasan, stop your concealed condescension! I get it, I do, but just... Stop. Or criticism, whichever it is.
And oh no I just thought of a really wrong joke. Just because he's got an income...; yeah, he's having Kame come inside him. xD Oh God I'm the worst/lamest.
UGGH AND DON'T MAKE MEISA AND JIN GET SO CLOSE. YOU ARE MAKING ME LOVE THEM TOGETHER AND YOU CAN'T DO THAT TO ME BECAUSE THEY WON'T BE GETTING BACK TOGETHER. AND ALSO I AM IN THE AKAME CAMP. USUALLY.
(no subject)
Date: 2013-02-01 12:02 pm (UTC)Yeah, Jin's mom is there, and she didn't distance herself from Jin or anything, but Jin's the one sort of keeping his distance because it's not like he's got good news very often.
Not that he always does, but with this entire Kame thing... Yeah, he kind of is. Even if his brain was probably all messed up and unable to comprehend what the fuck was going on. It can't go on forever, Kame paying him for... stuff. Jin's neither a whore nor charity, so, yeah.
It's interesting, isn't it? Is it the easy way, is it just practical, what are the ethics here. There's definitely something 'easy' about just taking Kame's money, but otoh, who'll benefit if he doesn't?
It's complicated. *g* And we note you're ending with question marks there too!
What a lovely big brother :D
He is! And we figure a pretty patient one too, with a princess of a sister. >_>
Just because he's got an income...; yeah, he's having Kame come inside him
LOLOL! THAT IS BAD AND HILARIOUS AND LAME AND WONDERFUL.
LOL, you sekrit Meisanishi shipper, you. Thank you for this feedback! <3

Date: 2013-01-31 09:10 pm (UTC)It all starts off so warm and (mostly) happy families and their little girl is trying to be an adult and Jin doesn't want to ruin it for her after she put so much effort into her speech. You can still feel the underlying currents of tension tho after the speech and Sara reciting her gift list. Kuroki-san (of course), Jin's mother not talking abt money/jobs in front of Kuroki-san, Jin not feeling guilty (for once) because of the money situation...still, it's seems everyone was actually happy today. Also really liked the hints that Jin is much more involved in his kids' lives now (knowing for certain he'll be taking Sara out and carrying her bags again, picking up Akira and seeing the bunny) and visiting is the norm rather than the exception.
I find it interesting that Jin's problem abt his...activities with Kame earning him a steady income isn't what Kame's doing to him but that he's taking Kame's money as his steady income with no thoughts about changing that situation.
he can't keep letting Kame... what? He can't keep letting Kame pay him or they can't keep having sex? Which would Jin pick? Hmm...
Akira will help me, he promised. And your mom would if I asked her Aww, responsible adult Akira, I'm kind of glad Meisa isn't left dealing with 2 chibi Jins. Jin's mum and Meisa's mum...do they get along or does Kuroki-san's dislike for Jin offend Jin's mum? Whatever it is, I hope it doesn't affect Meisa's relationship with Jin's mum and she knows there's someone else she can ask for help (with the kids or small errands) around.
They still fit together easily, catching glimpses of the living room through the gap in the door. I'm glad they're still friends and don't feel awkward abt remembering the happier times. It's such a parent thing to do though, feel proud together in the kitchen as you clear up and everyone else is in the living room having fun.
We'd save a fortune on shoes, too, That would never happen Meisa, she's a girl and you're a girl, whatever the age, the size of the shoe collection will inevitably increase.
If Jin's not going to be there for the party does that mean we won't get to see everyone's reaction to the giant duck?
(no subject)
Date: 2013-02-01 12:05 pm (UTC):D Yeah, if you let him, he's very involved, to the best of his ability. Gets him out of the house too!
I find it interesting that Jin's problem abt his...activities with Kame earning him a steady income isn't what Kame's doing to him but that he's taking Kame's money as his steady income with no thoughts about changing that situation.
:DDDD It is very interesting, isn't it. *g* He had a little wake-up moment there, though.
Aww, responsible adult Akira, I'm kind of glad Meisa isn't left dealing with 2 chibi Jins.
LOL! Yeah. Though Akira could probably do with some lightening up once in a while. >_>
Jin's mum and Meisa's mum...do they get along or does Kuroki-san's dislike for Jin offend Jin's mum?
We think they get along reasonably okay, and with a good dose of 'for the grandkids'. Jin's mom is probably a bit self-conscious around Meisa's mom because they both know who failed harder between Jin and Meisa, but Meisa's mom is not a super-evil bitch who likes to make people feel bad for the hell of it, and they are united in their adoration of the grandkids. :-)
That would never happen Meisa, she's a girl and you're a girl, whatever the age, the size of the shoe collection will inevitably increase.
LOL! You are right. And Sara's a girly girl -- there's definitely a flaw in Meisa's logic there. *g*
Oh, Jin will be there for the party! He'll just have to leave a bit earlier and so can't help with clean-up! So we hope you'll like the duck. >_>

unless we readers give such awesome feedback to you that you will feel the need to add some bonus weeks or whatever. I don't know. You two are in charge of the creative part so I'll leave that to you, surprise me (?)and I'm not getting all the sex and laughs I was promised. Just sayin'.(no subject)

Jin, you wise, wise cookie.
he can't keep letting Kame...
He really can't.
letting Kame...provide the biggest source of Jin's income and thus make Jin dependent on him? letting him sleep with Jin for money? letting him sleep with Jin, period? you evil evil author-sans!!! ♥ I guess we shall see....

Date: 2013-02-01 03:06 pm (UTC)this makes one impressed procrastinator.
also, I forgot: this chapter again made me wonder if there is a job for Jin in the industry... what with Kame making all these comments about Jin never knowing what's best for him (insinuating Kame does), about how he wouldn't have fired Jin, how he has now heard one of Jin's songs... I do wonder if the thought has occured to Kame. If or when Jin confronts him about the not letting him #*#* thing, that might be a good time to bring it up. just speculating. Though idk if Jin would be an unexpected weapon in the conspiracy, or if Kame would find the risk of it backfiring too high... Jin as a songwriter, maybe?
(no subject)
Date: 2013-02-06 03:49 pm (UTC)And Jin realizing the thing with Kame can't go on forever... ouch D: BUT THAT'LL BE ALRIGHT BECAUSE BY THE TIME YOU STOP YOU'LL BE IN LOVE AND AND AND-- *hides* *gets on her knees in front of Jo and Solo* Pleeeeaaaaase... ;;---; <3 *rolls*
I feel a need to say that I'm happy that Jin and Meisa are friendly with each other in this fic. Idk, I haven't read any other fics with Jin/Meisa yet but someone said on the comments that it's good to see Meisa's not a bitch and why would people write her as a bitch >____> I mean, we're free to do whatever we want with writing, of course. But if the reason of writing someone a bitch is because she's married to Jin in real life, I can understand the logic, but it doesn't seem a very good motivation and reason to do so. Because stories should be about the stories first, not about hating on someone. Excuse my rambling XD

Date: 2013-02-06 03:51 pm (UTC)Also, in this fic, Kame's totally the bitch XDD(no subject)

Date: 2013-02-06 07:42 pm (UTC)Yes, about Meisa, exactly as you're saying. Sure anybody can write what they like, but it's a very old trend to make the wives or girlfriends of the charas you want to ship into bitches (not just in JE or Real Person fandom, it's been going on for much longer than that) and it just seems terribly disrespectful. (It's also, from a writer's POV, crap characterisation.)
We can see why people do it. The character is in the way of their desires, so they go and hate on her. We just happen to think that's not a very nice way to conduct your affairs, in any context.
Glad you still like the kids. :D

Date: 2013-02-10 11:09 am (UTC)I guess nothing interesting happened there, since it wasn't mentioned anymore…. o.o
But I bet they had some Jellyfishes there in the water. XD
What has he been thinking? He needs a job, he needs an income. Just because he's got an income... he can't keep letting Kame...
He really can't.
Yeah. So far I still think Kame will get him back into work somewhere, hopefully as a songwriter etc. in JE.
It's just great that Jin starts thinking!
Meisa sighs, leaning against him. They still fit together easily, catching glimpses of the living room through the gap in the door.
You trolls! Not that they two will get together again, but this end was trolling the readers on a high level! It took some time to get Emi out of Jin x Meisa panic mood! ok, that conversation was fun. :D Won't have a bad concious anymore, because I finally commented. ^^ Sorry again for taking my time. m(__)m oh god, this is ridiculous. ¬.¬; ^^;

No more lethargic. He's a lot more interesting being a curious little flufflyfish. :D
But seriously, we dont' mean to troll anybody, we just like to think that they could still be friends.
I like them being friends as well. :D Just add a few over-reactive minds to it, they get terrified. XD
It's just so unrealistic that they end up together again. It'd be strange if you added a small relationship drama with Meisa and Jin as a plot device. Like making Kame jealous or whatever. Not gonna happen with you.

Date: 2013-02-18 02:13 pm (UTC)But god, Meisa’s mother again. >__> That was pretty mean of her and she can’t stop the teasing, huh? Good thing she’ll be there to see Jin’s awesome present! I'm glad about Jin’s reaction, though and that he can be all realxed because he has a present and it's awesome.
It’s good Jin thinks about looking for other jobs as well. That he’s back on track and knows he can’t really only rely on Kame and his money (and well, he doesn’t know how long Kame will come to him and give him, money after all). So it’s good that he at least seems to consider looking for other jobs. (Although I’m sure that he could always become a songwriter with Kame’s help. *g* But then again, I don’t know if he would actually want to work again in that business with what’s going on at the moment… or if Kame would want him to)
he can't keep letting Kame...
What? Come over and over again, touch Jin, fuck Jin, sweep Jin off his feet? Oh, I think Jin can. :P
They still fit together easily,…
Maybe, but the thing with things that fit together too easily is that they most likely also fall apart too easily. It’s the things that need some fiddling that will stay together forever. #goAkamego
But it was nice to get at least a little bit more information about Jin’s family and what they think and such. Also it’s nice that Jin and Meisa get along quite well. I guess that makes it easier for everybody.

Date: 2013-02-20 07:09 pm (UTC)Re Jin and work, yes, it's one thing to be okay with the sort of arrangement he has with Kame, but another to make that his only option. Because ultimately, it would not longer be as voluntary as it is; he needs to know that he does have a choice which isn't immediate bankruptcy again. He feels he owes that to himself.
Whether he'd want back in the industry... no, with what he's hearing about what's going on, it's not very tempting. Though maybe if it wasn't with JE... but even so, having to deal with all the idol crap again? Not sure at all.

LOL we like your interpretation. Akame in a nutshell. :)
